Playing a minion card places that minion onto the battlefield. This process is known as `summoning`. Each minion has a mana cost value, shown in the top left corner of the card, which shows the amount of mana Mana is the resource used in Hearthstone to play cards and use Hero Powers, each of which has a mana cost that must be paid to use it. The supply of mana is represented by hearthstone you must pay to summon the minion. Successfully playing a minion card will transform the card into the minion itself, which will then appear upon the battleground represented by a portrait. Once summoned the minion will stay on the battlefield until it is destroyed Destroying a minion or weapon removes it from play. Only minions currently on the battlefield and weapons that are currently equipped can be destroyed. Discarding a card removes it directly from the player s hand and hearthstone or returned A return to hand or return effect is a card effect whereby a minion, or more rarely a weapon or spell, is returned to the controlling player s hand. All cards drawn by the player during a game come from their deck. Each deck is tied to a specific class. Decks can be created and hearthstone , its Attack and Health will return to their original values, and any enchantments An enchantment, or buff or debuff, is a special effect gained by a minion. Minions may be played directly from the hand, or through the effects of other cards or minions, and some effects distinguish between these two types of summoning. Indirect methods of bringing minions into play are the Summon For information on summoning minions, see Minion#Summoning. Summon is an ability which summons one or more minions. The only action players can direct minions to take is attacking. Be that as it may, many additional effects and interactions can result from an attack, creating a wide range of gameplay options when multiple minions are in play. Additionally, many cards target A target is a specific character that a player action is "aimed at". Targeted effects are those that require a target to play, while others are untargeted. A spell, Hero Power, or Battlecry may be or otherwise affect minions when played from the hand, many triggered effects The lightning bolt icon, explicitly indicating a triggered effect Triggered effects are effects that activate in response to specific events. Minions enter the battlefield in a state of exhaustion (indicated by a "zzz" above them), and cannot attack This page describes the act of attacking. For the Attack attribute, see Attribute. Attacking or combat is what occurs when a player commands one character to attack another, causing them to simultaneously deal damage to while they are exhausted. Using a minion to attack will also exhaust it. Exhaustion lasts for one turn. This removes all card text, abilities and enchantments, and does not trigger any Deathrattles. Transformation is not an enchantment but rather a permanent hearthstone effect. The exhaustion that results from being summoned is sometimes known as summoning sickness.

Each turn, any minion that is not exhausted can be commanded to attack one target. Minions with Windfury can attack twice. Minions can be commanded to attack enemy minions or the opposing hero A hero is a character in the Warcraft universe representing the player. In Hearthstone, this concept is expressed in three interrelated but distinct ways: Heroes are gameplay characters representing players or bosses within a match. hearthstone . Minions can also be attacked directly by heroes, if the hero has increased their Attack stat by equipping a weapon or using certain spells.

In combat between minions it does not matter which target attacked which; each minion will suffer damage equal to the Attack of the other. This damage is dealt to both targets simultaneously. If either minion`s health is reduced to zero (or below) they will be destroyed and removed from the battlefield. With combat involving heroes, direction of attack is important. If a hero attacks a minion, both targets will take damage equal to the Attack of the other, but if a minion attacks a hero, only the hero will take damage; any weapon equipped by the hero will not be used, and so will also not lose Durability. If a minion causes a hero`s health to reach zero, the hero is destroyed, ending the game and granting victory to the surviving hero.

All minions have the innate ability to attack, except those such as Ancient Watcher which are specifically unable. Minions with 0 Attack (such as Mirror Images) cannot attack, but if their Attack reaches 1 or higher, they will become able to. Minions can also be prevented from attacking on any given round through effects that Freeze or otherwise incapacitate them, such as Frostbolt. Be that as it may, incapacitated minions will still defend themselves if attacked.

Many minions possess abilities which can grant them additional powers or have special effects in response to certain events. As well as being attacked, minions can also be affected by numerous friendly spells, healing their wounds, granting them new abilities, or using them to activate other cards.

Several specific minion types exist, often referred to as tribes or races, after similar concepts from other collectible card games. A minion`s type does not directly affect the behaviour of the minion, but allows it to be affected by certain type-specific effects. For instance, Tundra Rhino grants Charge For the card of the same name, see Charge (card) Charge is an ability allowing a minion to attack the same turn it is summoned. Charge is available to all classes, but is most strongly hearthstone to all friendly Beast minions while it is in play, while Murloc Warleader grants all friendly Murlocs +2/+1. Trivia

  • In addition to the minion types currently seen in-game, the game data contains tags for other types and races which are not currently used in-game.
    • All races playable in World of Warcraft were included in this data, except pandaren: Blood Elf, Draenei, Dwarf, Gnome, Goblin, Human, Night Elf, Orc, Tauren, Troll, Undead and Worgen. The data also included Nerubian, Ogre, and Scourge.
    • The Mechanical and Elemental types were originally among these unused tags, until they were added to the game and retroactively applied to a number of pre-existing minions at the same time. Mechanical was renamed to Mech and added with Goblins vs Gnomes. Elemental was added in Journey to Un`Goro.
While these types may show potential for future gameplay directions in Hearthstone, their current appearance in the game data is simply a remnant from the game`s early development stages. Some of these types can be seen in early screenshots, such as from the game`s alpha.

Introduction

Minions are creatures summoned to fight for their hero and assist them in the heat of battle. Minions are the main element towards Board Control. Many minions come with a high varierty of abilities such as Taunt, Deathrattle or Battlecry.

Mechanics

Minions are summoned by playing minion cards such as Chillwind Yeti, as an effect of other cards such as Onyxia or with Hero Powers of Paladin and Shaman. There is a limit of maximum of seven simultaneous minions per side. Number of same minions is not limited except for being every being allowed to have only two copies of each card and only one of each Legendary card.

Minions have Mana-cost that is denoted by the number in the blue hexagon on the top-left corner of the card. Attack value of a minion is shown in a yellow circle on the bottom-left corner of the card. Minion`s Health is shown in a red circle on the bottom-right corner of the card. Damaged minions have their health shown with red numbers whereas undamaged minions have white numbers showing their health. Minion that has received a buff such as Mark of the Wild has its Attack and Health shown on green numbers, until it receives damage and the Health number turns to red.

Subtypes

Minions can belong to a subtype, which is indicated by a text in the bottom of the card. Subtypes are very significant as there are many subtype spesific effects on cards across the game, some decks such as Hunter Unleash the Hounds-combo deck and Murloc decks are even built around these subtype spesific effects. Additionally cards of same subtype often have synergy that exceeds the value of individual cards.

The subtypes available are Pirate, Murloc, Beast and Dragon. At the moment there are no cards in the game that would affect the Dragon subtype.

Effects

Effects are the texts of minion cards. These may include Abilities and other effects. Some of the effects are conditional and will only take place once, for example when the minion is killed. Certain effects are in play for as long as the minion is on the board and is not Silenced.

Abilities

Minions can have different abilites. Currently there are seven different abilites in the game which are: Stealth, Battlecry, Taunt, Deathrattle, Charge, Divine Shield and Windfury. It is possible for a minion to have no abilites such as Chillwind Yeti, one ability like Loot Hoarder has or multiple abilites like in the case of Argent Commander.

Some minions have abilities innately, whereas others only have them if certain conditions are met or they are given ability via playing another card. Abilites are lost when minion is Hexed, Polymorphed or Silenced.
