Gameplay

Multiplayer works using a server, which allows players to play online or via a local area network with other people. There are various customisation options which can be set by operators. These settings depend on the type of server and can create many different multiplayer experiences.

Gameplay in Minecraft is generally the same in both single player and multiplayer, with some notable differences. Multiplayer has more of an emphasis on community and collaboration between players, which is assisted by the multiplayer chat function. Multiplayer allows for the player to build contraptions that are intended for multiple players. In addition, there are many adventure maps and mini games in which multiple players are required.

There is also an important difference: pausing the game works differently (like pausing when you open an LAN world in singleplayer). No game mechanisms will stop working if you pause the game. For instance, if you have items being smelted in a furnace, pressing ESC will not stop the smelting process.

Note: Multiplayer experiences can differ wildly depending on the server. Servers with mature groups of players may use offensive language during conversations, so young players in particular should take caution when joining multiplayer experiences. Depending on the server, there may be ways to report other players in contravention to the rules.

Chat

A multiplayer chat snippet.
Shows (from up to down) bold, strikethrough, underlined, italicized, and reset (₧r) text (also default)

Please note: Several of these commands are configurable (the defaults are shown here)

In multiplayer, players can press T to open the chat and talk to other players. Chat functions include:

Players can also type commands Contents 1 Usage 1.1 Tilde notation 1.2 Target selectors 1.2.1 Target selector variables 1.2.2 Target selector arguments 1.3 Data tags 1.4 Raw JSON text 1.5 Block/item names 2 Summary of commands 3 List of commands into the chat box. Commands are identified by the server with the use of a forward slash (/) at the beginning of the message.

  • Simply pressing / acts like a command key; it opens the chat with a / in it.
    • Typing / and then pressing Tab ↹ will list available commands, similar to entering the /help command.

While typing, pressing Tab ↹ will autocomplete the first possible command or username starting with the letter(s) typed. If there are multiple usernames or commands beginning with the letter(s), the chat will display a list of possibilities; pressing tab again will scroll through the list.

The chat box can be reduced in size, the opacity may be adjusted or it may be hidden via the chat settings in the options menu.

Narrator

The different narrator settings.

Pressing CTRL + B will toggle the narrator, a text-to-speech engine that automatically reads chat messages, including the username. The narrator can be toggled between several settings:

  • Off: The narrator is inactive.
  • All: The narrator will read chat and system messages.
  • Chat: The narrator will only read messages produced by players.
  • System: The narrator will only read messages produced by the system (command outputs, notifications, etc).

The narrator will not read commands or command outputs, nor will it read messages produced with /me.

Joining a server

The client asks for the IP address of the server in order to join a server. Thus, the player has to know the IP address of the server if they want to join. Some servers also have a whitelist, with an application form to fill out before the applicant is `whitelisted` - then they can log into the server. Some servers also require the use of Hamachi, or it requires you to pay a fee.

Due to the nature of IPv6 addresses, they must be entered in the format: IP:::IP:IP:PORT

Features

Survival Multiplayer has all of the features that the single player Beta has, along with the ability to chat and interact with other players. Much of the actual content that is in the server, though, is in plugin form - many plugins are available, which allow numerous features, such as an administrative system, new game content, (e.g.: money) shops, auctions (iConomy), or even the ability to govern the speed of minecarts with whichever block the track is placed on (Minecart Mania!). Some of these plugins have global blacklists, (such as MCAdmin and MCBans). In Beta 1.6, the ability to access the Nether in SMP was added. Entry to the Nether is the same as in SSP; an obsidian portal.

LAN

LAN stands for Local Area Network, and expands over a short range. LAN worlds can typically only be entered in a single household. To start a LAN world, simply open up and save, open the menu, and click "Open to LAN." There, rules can be set, such as Cheats, and Game Mode.
